AI Grant was founded by Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross. Below are introductions of the two founders.
Nat Friedman is an American investor, entrepreneur, and developer, born on August 6, 1977. He graduated from MIT with a major in computer science and mathematics. He co-founded Ximian and Xamarin with Miguel de Icaza; the latter was acquired by Microsoft, where he became the corporate vice president of developer services. In 2018, Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion, and Friedman was appointed as its CEO. During his tenure, he launched several key products, including GitHub Copilot, and facilitated multiple acquisitions. He also co-founded California YIMBY, which focuses on addressing housing shortages in California. In 2021, he left GitHub to focus on investing in startups, particularly in the AI sector. Additionally, he created nat.dev, a web interface for large language models.
Daniel Gross is an Israeli-American entrepreneur and investor born in 1991, known for his innovations and investments in technology and artificial intelligence. In 2010, he founded Greplin (later renamed Cue), which was acquired by Apple in 2013. In 2017, Gross joined Y Combinator as a partner, focusing on artificial intelligence, and founded Pioneer, an early-stage startup accelerator. In 2021, he collaborated with Nat Friedman to make significant investments in the AI field and launched the AI Grant program, providing funding support for AI companies. Additionally, they deployed the Andromeda Cluster in 2023, offering supercomputing resources to startups. Gross has been named one of the "most influential figures in artificial intelligence" by Time magazine and has invested in well-known companies such as Uber, Figma, and GitHub.
